A poem is a little thing
That sings a little song
It hums itself into your head
But then before too long
It starts to itch unbearably,
It scratches at your eyes
Its fingers tighten on your throat
It pecks at your insides.
A poem is a little thing
That sings a little song
The only anti-dote is to
Sing lustily along.

How hard could it be, I asked myself,
To walk with words on a page?
For just one month
To hop and skip, jump
And run with words?
I know words! We’ve been friends forever.
We’ve balanced together on really high ledges
Placing our feet heel-to-toe, heel-to-toe,
Arms stretched out, hands hovering.
We’ve snuggled together in blanket tents
Kicked each other’s feet under the table.
We’ve even dive-bombed off pages with loud yells
And surfaced, sputtering, in unlikely pools.
So how hard could it be,
This February Pledge?
But this morning when I came out to play
All my words had run away.
They were playing Hide and Seek.
And I was It.

I was born just after “the war”
My first bed a padded out drawer
I survived a bug that was killing
This was a bleak beginning
It continued in this vein for some time
Health was an upward climb
Then when I started school
I was considered to be a fool
I could not read or write
My classmates could all read and write
Oh they said she’s not very bright
I tried and I tried but could not achieve
Then what they said I began to believe
We concentrated on sewing and knitting
By six high quality I was hitting
Neighbours would visit our house
Just to see the jumper or blouse
This child was sewing or knitting
By twelve was quite amaster
And sense began to come from this disaster
I was beginning to read and to write
Which gave them all quite a fright
I was streamed in a B class that year
I was first in exams and its clear
That a fool I was not
It was Dyslexia I’d got
I looked to the future without any fear

I have Day One and Day Two poems up on Turquoise Monster.
The first one Flame/Candle is just what came to mind from the writing exercise.
The second one Seeds is basically a memory from when I was in Kenya during a charity effort in the year 2000.
Feedback would be appreciated 🙂

My first rhyme done by 1 am
I think myself quite clever
The day goes by
Time’s getting short
The first deadline missed for ever
